Reasoner Podcast 3: Baile Burning

baile burning
We know you’ve all been waiting for it—so here it is. Our third podcast keeps the Brazilian theme with lots of fun Baile Funk, but sways toward what we term “Bailectro”: the fusion of Cansei de Ser Sexy (aka Tired of Being Sexy) with MC Edi-style Funk. The mix spans from Baile Funk to Electro to Post Punk to Tropicalia to Grime to Brega to Samba Rock to everything in between. All of the artists are Brazilian—with the exception of the Diplo and Sujinho tracks (and well, if they would just learn Portuguese, they might as well be).

Also, a note on the use of the term “Baile.” I know some people have been complaining recently that it is a misnomer—that Brazilians call it “Funk Caroica.” Let me say, though, that my friends from Rochina have told me that Funk Carioca is really only what the mainstream media and the non-Funkeiro/as call it. Most people just tend to say Funk. Baile Funk may have originally referred to the associated parties, or “balls,” but it looks like as is often the case in the evolution of languages and genres, the name has stuck.

Just stumbled upon your your blog and appreciate you sharing this badass mix.

On what to call “baile funk,” during my time in Brazil it was almost always called funk in casual conversation or funk carioca when being more technical about the genre. Baile funk always was used to refer to the baile itself and usually only seemed to refer to bailes in the favelas of Rio not the type of shows I was seeing in São Paulo. A less popular term – supposedly used by those “in the know” – for the genre is “pancadão,” the superlative of hit. Then again I don’t have many any friends in Rochinha and the few funkeiros I meant were from São Paulo. If you want to trade albums hit me up on soulseek joe703 or drop me an e-mail.

  2. Rocinhajj Says:

we call it Funk. Baile can mean “Ball” or “Party”..so baile funk..means funk party..

  3. atari Says:

yeah i agree that they mostly just call it “funk.” when i asked about “funk carioca,” though, the people from rochina said that it was a very “official” phrase that they didn’t actually use.. i agree that it is pretty much called it just plain “funk” in brazil, but well to do so elsewhere would be quite confusing, so i stand by my argument that baile funk is acceptable. after all, this is the funk played at the bailes in brazil…

  4. Global Voices Online » Blog Archive » Brazil: Favela Funk Says:

[...] Noting the blogosphere’s buzz about Kevin Federline’s debut single “Popoção,” Arjan says that the favela funk genre from urban Rio de Janeiro could experience a pop boom in 2006. Made in Brazil, disappointed with the Federline track, thinks that “we are certainly going to have to count on a real singer to bring Brazilian funk to the spotlight in 2006.” If you’d like to start the new year with a foot ahead of the mainstream, Atari has put up her third podcast full of Baile Funk and “Bailectro.” [...]

[...] 1.) Music amazing music everywhere. My hope was to mail out all the CD’s this afternoon, but that’s definitely getting delayed until tomorrow. In the meantime, make sure to download all the goods at EMC’s, Prentiss Riddle’s, and leave a comment at Revaz’s begging for his fantastic year-end mix as well. I’m listening to Prentiss’ mix as I type and am lovin’ “Peel Me a Grape” by Torch. That’s some good jazz. (Title of today’s post comes from a song on Prentiss’ mix) Also, absolutely make sure to check out Fernando’s mix of Canciones Pegajosas and Atari’s badass podcast of Baile Funk. [...]

I like see funk get good esposure in the US. In Brazil, most people do not like funk, they think baile funk is shi*. There is much discrimation against poor people and funk is from poor people. I experence much discrimation because I live in the favela. But music makes me very happy. Funk=comunidade!

    Every body enjoy funk!

  11. DJ Lord Lingham Says:

I’ve always been a fan of Brazilian electronica but got into “baile” funk a year or so ago, and have been absolutely crazy about it since then. I often drop funk tracks in my DJ sets and the audience love it, though the genre is beginning to gain some popularity here in Australia (any baile funk aficionados from Oz over here?), thanks to MIA and Diplo, and world music DJs like myself!

What I’d like to know from those of you very familiar with funk and even been to favela parties is some information about prominent DJs/producers other than Marlboro, Felipe Carvalhos, and Eliel Campos. Also, is the recording process similar to Jamaican dubplate style, i.e. a DJ/producer composes the instrumental version and gets vocalists and MCs to contribute vocals to it, therefore being able release different versions?

  12. Sista Opportunity Says:

Hey DJ Lord Lingham, Im a total Baile Funk fan…plus went to M.I.A gig two nights ago in Sydney…was great! ;) Would love to hear some of your stuff..Whats your site url? Cheers

  14. Lord Lingham Says:

    Hi Sista Opportunity,

Great to hear from you. I don’t have a website as such, though you’ll find info about me by doing a search on my DJ name (Lord Lingham) or “Urban Djenga Vybes”. I am based in Melbourne and host a radio show called “The Global Urban Show” on PBS-FM (www.pbsfm.org.au), in which I play some baile funk as well as Brazilian hip hop, reggaeton, bhangra, etc. Do you know Sydney DJs Michael Correa and Mashy P? They play some baile funk I believe. Cheers

  18. dj Rideon Says:

To Lord Lingham: There are several wicked producers doing baile funk in Rio. Marlboro had the more sophisticated means of production for years, but now a lot of fresh producers and djs are entering the scene. They only lack of publishers and distributers as most of the funk produced in Rio is still going to the market on pirate cds.

Anyway, if you wanna chat more about this, drop a line to timo.santala(at)gmail.com
