Bonde do Role
July 18th, 2006 by atari
Okay, I think I may have had a slight change of heart on this one. Pronounced Bon-ge doh Hole-e, this group of cute, rich Brazilian white kids might better be characterized as Funk Light (Lie-ch in Portuguese). They can’t play in the favelas, they’re not the “real” (baile) funk, but they do make party music that’s reasonably fun to dance to.
After having heard their tracks and all the hype, I wasn’t too thrilled with their music, often throwing their cutesy funk-style lyrics over recognizable samples of, say, AC/DC or Alice in Chains. I pegged them as just another overhyped band that was being pitched to the hipster crowd by, um, Diplo. After having seen them live last night, though, I do think they have a role to play as funk (light) ambassadors. The fact of the matter is that many funk artists will not come to the US to play. Even DJ Marlboro, the most well known funk DJ in Brazil, only started coming a few years ago and mainly as a result of the Funk hype abroad. Now that it’s starting to catch on even more, why won’t they come you ask? The simple answer is money. A Funk performer/DJ can make far more money at the massive bailes in Brazil than they could make on a tour of the US, plain and simple (as related to me by Marlboro’s manager).
So, as a result, since Bonde do Role can’t really play at the massive funk balls (they would be completely out of place), they’ve given the US a shot, and I do think that’s a good thing. It’s not that they don’t play in Brazil—they were supposed to play at a huge music festival organized by the owners of the über-electro Vegas club in São Paulo (along with Juan Maclean and Tim Sweeney), but as it was supposed to take place in 5 surrounding strip clubs, and they supposedly didn’t have the proper licenses, it was all shut down at the last minute.
Toward the end of the show last night, BdR starting doing a bunch of funk covers, although I’m thinking most other people didn’t realize. I’d have to say I liked the covers better than their original work, but then again, funk is all about borrowing/remixing, and that’s one thing I love about it. Now if only we had a semi-reasonable column..

Yeah, you are sure about them, they are not REAl funk booty rap, they dont have guts enough to go to rio and play with dj marboro or real Funk afro brazilian artists, bonde do role is stupid and fake like nazi rap.Their lyrics are just talking about bullshit and some fetchism about sex with dirty genitalia, they are just Vanilla ices,or people that must to take a bath,at least once in a week.marina is just a kelly osbourne lesbian version, with crappy voice, and the two other kids are just a nerds and losers.

Good morning all,
every day I use to bring my kinds to school and on the way back to earn more money so i can give more to my dears for example I can pay for their university, and being curious about internet I wanna build a website to try to make money with affiliate. My actual job is a public work so I have 1 free hour a day to make it. At this stage I am trying to figure out how to select a good domain hosting virtual .When I have built it I wanna make an marketing plan, so I can get a bunch of clicks and get started. Everyone should read about their rights as a tenant and as a landlord. Any suggestion is welcome.
Bye Bye

If Diplo wanted to really “befriend” or help people of the “Favelas” and give back he would be trying to promot kids from favelas..considering he has already taken so much from the favelas..why not give something back?? Those who really need it. The people who live in the favelas..There is Soooo much talent in the favelas that to go out and put these middle class kids on display..shame on Diplo..their “music” is trash..and NOT real Funk CARIOCA!!
