The Caps Lock Key

CapsLock

Slashdot is running an article on the campaign to get rid of the caps lock key. Caps off, as the group is called, assures us that the world would be a far better place with a much more useful key in that position.

Hey, I’m all for it. When was the last time you purposefully used the caps lock key? When was the last time it was on by mistake and no wonder why all of your passwords didn’t work? Enough said.

funny. but the geek in me has to point out that (some) coders still use caps lock all the time when writing programs.

particularly when defining consants as you can see in this example.

I agree that caps lock doesn’t belong in any form of human readable writing. Especially all those emails I keep getting from Nigeria.

Yes! I say get rid of the caps lock and make the Scroll Lock and Pause/Break buttons BIGGER! Because we all KNOW that those buttons get used MUCH more than caps lock. Seriously, I can not freaking believe people have this much time to waste in their lives to make such a big deal about something as insignificant as this (and I’m a network admin so don’t give me crap about “password errors”. People can and will find other ways to be stupid). Then there’s all the ignorance that seems to follow. “oh it was created by programmers who write FORTRAN.” Hello! My mother has a manual typewriter from 1935 and it has a caps lock on it! Time travel? OK sure, whatever. So what use is it today? Well, playwrights for example. Every script ever made for TV or movies or plays uses All Caps extensively. It’s just part of the protocol. I’m sure there are plenty of uses, otherwise they wouldn’t have had it before WW2 (that’s not a typo or a prequel to w3 BTW). I think disabling it is a good idea for people who have clumsy fingers (like me soemtmies) but making such “demands” just reflects on the complainer’s character. Badly.

Nicely put! Well, I don’t personally use the caps lock key, as I only use the keyboard for ‘simple’ tasks like emails, messenger, web browsing etc.. I can see it having more use though in jobs where capital letters are used frequently.. If you’re doing some complex programming where entire chunks of text will be in upper case then you do not really want to be holding shift for prolonged periods and with that being just one example, as above if you don’t need it then don’t use it.. Its not the keyboard manufacturer’s fault if you can’t type ‘a’ without pressing caps instead.. (Not you personally)..

Programmers do use the caps lock key for typing constants such as VK_RETURN or USER_MESSAGE and it is also useful for certain Fonts that look better in all capslock, such as the font used for REASONER at the very top of this page.

Certain fonts are designed to look good graphically when in caps lock such as the reasoner font you see on this website – so stop complaining and use it to your advantage.

We could argue that no one needs the Number pad and that stores should sell more keyboards without the number pad – but I wouldn’t say we should ban the number pad. I personally rarely use it, but a restaraunt or store would use the number pad for entering in phone numbers and debit card numbers and what not.
